I have a second generation Kindle. Can I buy Barnes and Noble eBooks and convert them, or do they absolutely have to be Amazon?

I am wanting to buy this kindle but I want to make sure that I can really use the free wireless feature that Amazon is mentioning. IS it hassle-free? I hope someone could share their Kindle experiences in the Philippines. Thanks!

The new Kindle 2.0 is very tempting and Amazon doesn’t look set to release it overseas anytime soon.
Has anyone else attempted using Kindle (first gen/second gen) in Australia? I would like to know what are some of the problems encountered and if it’s worth the trouble.
