My brother in law and my aunt have Kindle 2's and have the Amazon's leather cover, without the two bands on the right side. Having had the benefit of inspecting their purchases, I decided that the two bands are a necessary addition to the cover. With the Amazon cover, the Kindle is like a stiff page inside a three ring binder that is kept in place by two tiny pins in the center of the cover. If you hold the Kindle itself by it's right side, the right side of the Amazon cover will hang awkwardly down a few inches, putting stress on the left side of the Kindle and on the two pins. I think this is probably the cause of the cracks in the side of the Kindle that people have reported with the use of that cover.
The M-Edge GO! Jacket solves this problem with the two bands, not allowing the right side of the Kindle to become detached from the right side of the cover. The bands work perfectly and don't get in the way of any of the controls.
The inside of the jacket is nice, a soft gray fabric-like material that is pleasant to hold. I opted for the blue cover, mainly because I'm tired of the ubiquitous black leather binder look. I have a bunch of black leather binders, briefcases, and things like that associated with work, so the blue cover subtly telegraphs "I'm not work" to me when I see it.
The color of the cover pretty well matched the color that showed on my monitor. It's not bright enough to be girly, and not dark enough to be serious, somewhere in the middle, which is what I was looking for. |
Comfortable Kindle 2 cover

| It took me longer to pick out a cover for my Kindle 2 than to decide to order the Kindle. There were so many to choose from. This cover has several great attributes. It is soft to the touch but sturdy. The blue is a beautiful rich color. I have had this for 6 months now and it still looks new. It is comfortable to hold either fully open like a book, or folded over. I tend to fold it over more often. It does fold over completely flat and becomes the size of the Kindle. There is no exposed spine edge when folded like others I have seen. The inside of the cover provides excellent cushion and protection for the Kindle. The corner tabs and side hinge keep my Kindle firmly in place. I am very happy with this cover. I have taken it on plane trips and carry it everywhere in my purse. It is a constant companion and I look forward to years of use. |

| This cover is an attractive way to protect your Kindle. The "hook" in feature holds the Kindle securely and the straps are just added insurance that the Kindle remains in place. It is not too thick, nicely padded, and very well made and for the price; making a second color a very affordable option. I love mine and will be ordering the Marbled Red cover as well. |

| The new kindle does not come with a cover, so you have to find one. This is the perfect cover. The kindle is held in and there is no possible way for it to fall out. This cover is very durable and thick so even when dropped nothing can happen to your kindle. Also it comes in many colors! It is very much the perfect kindle cover! |
Superior alternative to the Amazon cover

I mainly opted for an M-Edge cover because of reviews that complained about case cracks when using the Amazon cover. I'm glad I did, I just received an Amazon email today detailing the Kindle Warranty and instructions on how not to use the Amazon cover... I assume this was sent to all Kindle owners. They pretty much verify that the Amazon case can lead to cracks if used incorrectly. The M-Edge case uses the same latching mechanism, but has the two additional corner straps to prevent bending the cover the wrong way. I initially thought the straps did provide a very snug fit, but they really don't need to considering the solid connection at the latch points. The straps do, however, provide ample security to prevent incorrect opening of the case and they also provide a quick visual confirmation of how the cover is oriented.
The M-Edge cover seems to be of nice build quality, my Kindle has been on 2 business trips thrown into a backpack, no significant scuffs or scratches on the leather and the stitching appears to be pretty durable.
As others have noted, the pebbled blue color is pretty accurate to the photos on the site, maybe a little darker in person. Not too girly (I'm a man), with a very mild sheen. The full interior is a nice soft suede.
I previously used a Kindle with an Amazon cover. I found the M-Edge was a tiny bit trickier to latch into place, but once locked it performs the same as the authentic Amazon latch. If I remember correctly, the closed Amazon cover with Kindle inside might be a tiny bit thinner than the M-Edge, but not by a significant amount. The M-Edge front cover is nicely rigid so I am comfortable that the screen is protected.
My only original gripe was that the lining seemed to be separating from the back cover where the top corner strap attaches on the right side of the case. There is a gap between the liner and the cover. Looking more closely, though, it is clearly a design choice since both the liner and cover are separately stitched and their is reinforced stitching above and below the gap region. I'm not sure of the purpose of the separation, but I certainly don't worry about it spreading/splitting. I will post a picture to better illustrate what I'm describing.
The cover will indeed fold all the way over, so the front of the cover can fold back against the back cover, but it is a little stiff and I always worry about how much of this the spine will tolerate. I typically don't read like this anyway, preferring to keep the cover open like a conventional hardcover book, so I don't plan to test the durability under this type of use.
Overall, I'm very pleased. The cover works well, looks good, and seems durable. That's what I expected, and that's what I got. |
